Comprehensive Boost Mobile Plans Reviews

If your cell phone contract is almost up, it might be time to consider switching networks. Switching cell phone networks can be a daunting task when you have so many to choose from. You have to decide much more than just what network you'll be on. You will also need to decide what phone you'll get, how much you are willing to pay per month, whether you'd like to pre-pay or post-pay, and what features you would like to have. To make your decision easier, today we will provide a detailed review of Boost Mobile and see how Sprint's Boost Mobile plans measure up to competitors.

About Boost Mobile

Boost Mobile is a prepaid phone service that uses Sprint's network. Prepaid means you pay for the month ahead instead of post-paying for each month of cell service. One advantage of prepaying on Boost Mobile vs. post-paying on a major cell carrier is that prepaying does not lock you into an extended contract. There are no early termination fees if you choose to switch to another network, which could really be an advantage if you're in-between cell phone plans and aren't ready to be in another binding agreement.

Product Specs

The Boost Mobile plans keep you out of a contract without sacrificing the features you want from a cell service provider. Boost Mobile doesn't just have the basics: it offers unlimited data plans, HD streaming, and unlimited music streaming depending on which of the Boost Mobile plans you decide to select for your service. Boost Mobile's website features a wide selection of cell phone options to choose from.

Pricing

Boost Mobile plans are very affordable and can be canceled or changed at any time. The most basic plan will only set you back around $35 each month. Of course, the price will go up as you add more features and more data. Regardless, Boost Mobile is still less expensive than similar plans on most major cell phone carriers.

The one thing that might be a challenge when switching to a prepaid service is that there is not an option to make monthly payments for your phone. You will need to purchase a cell phone outright or bring an already-paid-for phone with you that is compatible with the Boost Mobile plans. Luckily, with the money you save from using a prepaid network rather than a postpaid one, you will break even pretty quickly.

While Boost Mobile is good for free spirits who don't want to commit to a two-year cell phone plan, it is also a great option for those with a strict budget to adhere to.

Carrier quality

Boost Mobile uses Sprint's cell phone towers, which can be a bit spotty. If you live in a rural area or spend a lot of time outside of the city, Boost Mobile might not be the best cell phone provider for you. However, within its parameters, it works just as well as any other major cell phone provider.

Boost Mobile provides excellent customer service via phone, email, and social media correspondence. They get back to customers as quickly as possible and are very knowledgeable about their service. Considering their pattern of providing good customer service, however, the lack of a web-based chat feature is really a small gripe in the grand scheme of things.

  • No annual contract
  • Great price for service

CONS

  • Cannot use certain phones
  • The connection can be spotty

Verizon Plans

Verizon Plans

Verizon Wireless is one of the best cell phone carriers out there when it comes to speed and performance. When you think of Verizon, you probably think of it as a major postpaid cell phone provider. While this is true, what many people don't know is that Verizon Wireless also offers very decent prepaid cell phone plans.

PRICE - $$

If you use Verizon's prepaid cell phone service, then you will pay a very similar amount to what you would pay if you went with Boost Mobile. However, its postpaid cell phone contracts are on the pricey side, though not unreasonable by any means. If you're paying for a cell phone monthly on top of the cost for your cell phone plan, your monthly expense can go up substantially.

Carrier quality

We have found Verizon to be the fastest cell phone provider in the United States. You don't even have to be in the United States to use Verizon's service. For a daily fee, you can use your phone overseas if you find yourself traveling often for work or recreation. Because Verizon has some of the best cell phone coverage in the country, choosing Verizon is probably a safe bet no matter where you live in the United States.

Verizon has a plan for anyone and everyone. Its plans range from expansive unlimited plans to basic budget plans and everything in between. For a single person on a plan, the plans can be more on the expensive side, but the more lines you add to your plan the more money you save.

Verizon has a variety of different phones that work on its network including Android, Apple, Blackberry, and even Windows Phones. Besides phones, Verizon offers plans for Apple Watches, Chromebooks, iPads, and much more. There are also several promotional cell phones that you can't get on any carrier besides Verizon.

T-Mobile Plans

T-Mobile Plans

T-Mobile has branded itself as the "uncarrier." This means that you won't be stuck in a contract when you sign up with them. They specialize in special features such as T-Mobile Tuesdays, which provide free services or discounts from companies such as Cold Stone or Lyft just for T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile prides itself on its customer service; it provides its customers with customer service representatives in their area to avoid the dreaded call center runaround.

PRICE - $$

T-Mobile isn't known for being one of the most cost-effective carriers. Even their least costly prepaid plan is still more expensive than the most inexpensive prepaid Verizon or Boost Mobile plans. However, taking into consideration the bonus features that you get just for being with T-Mobile, you do get what you pay for.

Carrier quality

T-Mobile lags slightly behind Verizon in terms of speed and doesn't have as much coverage, but the coverage is still more than decent and will likely work everywhere you need it to - including Mexico and Canada.

Plans

Just like Verizon, T-Mobile plans get less expensive per line the more you add to your postpaid plan. The postpaid plans that T-Mobile offers are impressive. They offer nothing less than unlimited data, and when you add at least one additional line to your phone plan, you get a free standard Netflix account included in your T-Mobile bill for no extra charge. Not to mention the exclusive discount plans for military families and for those aged 55 and older.

phone Selection

T-Mobile has a decent selection of phones; however, it has a somewhat limited variety compared to the other major carriers. It does try to make up for it by allowing you to experience virtually any phone you want whenever you want. If you're on T-Mobile's network, whenever the next new phone comes out, you can get it right away if enrolled in their JUMP! program. You will simply have to pay for half of the cost of your current phone before you can trade it in. So there's no need to wait until you're finished paying off your device to get the next new thing.

Customer service

As of 2018, T-Mobile is a two-time winner of the "Highest in Customer Service among Full-Service Wireless Providers" award. Due to their commitment to providing customer service with real people via their Team of Experts system included on their app. This is a chat-based service that works right from your phone and is included with your service if you are on a postpaid plan. If you aren't on a postpaid plan, don't fret! T-Mobile is active on social media, responsive on the phone, and their store associates are always happy to help walk-ins, so you have plenty of other ways to get customer support.

  • Free Netflix on a family plan
  • Excellent customer service

AT&T Plans

AT&T Plans

AT&T is an all-around good cell phone provider. It has lagged behind the times when it comes to offering unlimited plans to its postpaid customers and offering sufficient data to its prepaid customers, but it is quickly catching up and making up for lost time.

PRICE - $$

AT&T's prices are similar to that of the other major carriers such as T-Mobile and Verizon, though it ends up being more expensive than both if you need to add multiple lines to your account. AT&T has some of the most expensive prepaid plans when compared to plans consisting of similar features, so if you're seeking prepaid plans, you might want to do a little more research before committing to AT&T.

Carrier quality

AT&T is one of the fastest cell phone networks on the market. It is very comparable to Verizon and T-Mobile and edges ahead of Sprint and Boost Mobile's network.

Plans

AT&T may have taken its time in providing its customers with unlimited options, but it didn't slack on the features. Its Premium service includes a source of streaming entertainment of your choice. Options include Amazon Music, Pandora, and more. The plans, however, are more on the expensive side when you have an entire household needing to be on a phone plan. If you're looking to get on a prepaid plan, you have options. AT&T has two different prepaid plans, and the cheaper of the two is subject to throttling if the network becomes congested. This is not the case when you are on the more expensive plan.

phone Selection

AT&T has one of the best selections of phones out of all the major carriers. Whether you're looking for the latest models to stay on the cutting edge of technology or you're looking for an earlier model to save money, AT&T most likely has everything you're looking for. Some phones in AT&T's repertoire are even exclusive to AT&T customers.

Customer service

Calling AT&T for customer service can be a pain due to their automated system that has a tendency to transfer you to the wrong department. Other than that, AT&T is extremely helpful via the phone and their online chat-based customer service. If you prefer to do your communication through social media, their team does respond to inquiries, comments, and concerns made through Twitter and Facebook; though they understandably tend to take their time when responding in this manner.

PROS

  • Great selection of phones
  • Great selection of plans

CONS

  • Automated customer service call system
  • Expensive prepaid plans

Final Verdict

We give Boost Mobile a light 3/5 stars. Boost Mobile plans are an excellent deal for those on a budget and living in Sprint's coverage area. If you live in a rural area of the country or frequently travel to such areas for business or recreation and would like reliable cell service, then we would recommend you shy away from Boost Mobile. Though if you live in the city, want a great selection of phones, and don't want to be under a traditional two-year cell phone plan, then you might find that one of Boost Mobile's plans is a good option for you.
